Care Farm in North Devon

Apple Tree Farm Services will be shut over the Sum Apple Tree Farm Services will be shut over the Summer Holidays to our term time students (we are running our HAF Programme) and then we will have a farm shutdown week commencing 7th September.

We look forward to welcoming children back to the farm week commencing 14th September.

Have a great Summer everyone!
We are in the unfortunate position where we need t We are in the unfortunate position where we need to find a new and big flock for our Aylesbury drake. He is called Jeremy Quackson and he is fierce! Not afraid to defend his girls against dogs, cats or humans. Sounds great, doesn’t it? However he is also a fierce lover and he is hurting his girls, so he needs a much larger number of girls than we can offer him. Can anyone help?

The management have been informed that the ice pole drawer is empty. But like, empty, empty. They’ve been to assess the situation and can confirm echos have been heard.

Additionally, the bacon bits are all squealing in fear of becoming crackling. 🐷

We have experienced some disruptions to our sessions today, not because of the ice pole crisis but because it’s a tad warm to keep our children and animals safe.

We expect normal ice pole and farm service to resume on Monday. 🤞🏽

That’s it folks.

We are done for with this business model. We have come to the conclusion that our future lies in the constant provision of iced treats for animals.

In this positively tropical climate, we have tried and tested many means of keeping the animals cool and our best seller is the Giant Iced Treat bowl.

The client base is small, mind. Only the pigs and goats seem keen but we will push on and hope by the next heatwave we will be able to retire into the blazing sunset.

Friday sometime in June- we cannot even be sure of the date but it is tomorrow. 🗓️ The farm will be open for another day of adapted provision. After the week we have all had, we will be all but ash by then. 😮‍💨

See you tomorrow friends!
☠️🥵 Day 247 of furnace inhabitation 🥵☠️ We’ve had ☠️🥵 Day 247 of furnace inhabitation 🥵☠️

We’ve had yet another reshuffle and yesterday’s committee quit over their unmet demands to have their sprinkler system activations upgraded to 10 per day, so we have been forced to search for a new team to lead us. We’ll quickly be giving No 10 a run for its money. 😝

Alas, every creature on this land has all but given up. The rabbits are permanently frogging, the guinea pigs have made a burrow of straw and not left it since Sunday night, declaring a full shut down until the weather conditions are less like the Peruvian Amazon. 🌳🌴

The donkeys are officially confused because they were certain The Donkey Sanctuary, which rehomed them with us, was based in North Devon but suddenly they feel like they’re in North Africa.

It is chaos!

And then we remembered the ferrets and thought we could be on to something here because the collective noun for ferrets is a business. A business of ferrets sounds just like what we need to lead us out of this inferno.

We were so wrong because the ferrets have also given up the ghost. Literally, flat out on their backs, with tongues sticking out. We gotta hand it to them though, this is ‘death nap’ pro level. We’ve since prodded and poked them and they have risen in a haze of overheated brain power and no logic.

Thus, the humans have been forced to convene again and make decisions. 😱

✅ Thursday 25th June: we have run out of steam and farm will be CLOSED for the day.

Forecast: by 12pm tomorrow we expect the team to have professionally mastered the art of death napping like a business of ferrets.

Disclaimer: no ferrets have been harmed in this process.
There have been developments. The bacon bits are f There have been developments. The bacon bits are full of attitude today… 🙄 We may have to negotiate seven sprinkler operations for the day but we must manage expectations. 🥵
🐷☀️ Weather Update for Wednesday 24th June ☀️🐷 Ye 🐷☀️ Weather Update for Wednesday 24th June ☀️🐷

Yesterday’s emergency weather committee have been replaced following reports of too much splashing and not enough committeeing.

We’ve upgraded to a much more sophisticated team, and they come with some high-tech cooling mechanisms such as a human operated sprinkler system (five times per day, no less!) and a mud pool! 🐖

Anyway, the new committee has decided that the weather is positively cozy. As such they feel the current disruption to our farm sessions to be entirely justifiable, although they argued that if we made use of their mud pool the disruptions could be reduced.

We chose to politely decline that offer, and instead we will continue to run heavily adapted sessions on Wednesday 24th June. ✅

Some sessions have been cancelled, others have been reduced and it is highly likely that after midday tomorrow some of the sprinkler system operators may well reconsider that offer and join the new committee in the wallow. 🥵

🦆 Duck Weather Bulletin for sessions Tuesday 23rd 🦆 Duck Weather Bulletin for sessions Tuesday 23rd June 🦆

Our emergency weather committee (pictured) has been hard at work this morning conducting extensive water-based inspections and paddle-powered risk assessments.

Following the latest forecast and our ongoing dynamic risk assessments, some sessions scheduled for Tuesday 23rd June will unfortunately be disrupted or cancelled due to the weather conditions.

📧 Parents, carers and commissioners: please check your emails carefully and acknowledge receipt of any cancellation notifications so that we know everyone has received the information safely.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while we navigate what promises to be a very interesting week. Further updates will be shared via email and social media as our dynamic risk assessments continue.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and keep an eye on your inbox.

The Duck Weather Office currently rates conditions as: “Mostly Paddling with a Chance of Chaos.” ☀️🦆☀️
🌞 HOT WEATHER UPDATE 🌞 Over the nearly ten years 🌞 HOT WEATHER UPDATE 🌞

Over the nearly ten years we’ve been running Apple Tree Farm, we’ve learned that weather warnings require two very different approaches depending on the season.

🌧️ Winter weather? That’s easy. We take one look at the forecast, mutter “absolutely not,” and start preemptively making plans before the first raindrop lands.

☀️ Summer weather? Completely different. Summer demands the highly sophisticated professional approach known as… “let’s wait and see.” this is where we excel…

So, while the country collectively debates whether +30°C is glorious or unbearable, we’re keeping a very close eye on the forecast this week and we’d appreciate your help by asking you to keep an eye on our social media updates too.

The management have already convened today (thank goodness for WhatsApp groups), and a plan has been formed.

Some members of the team are even working overtime* this evening preparing paddocks so our animals can move to areas with maximum shade and comfort. Dynamic risk assessments have been completed and we’re making sure everyone—two-legged and four-legged—is looked after.

✅ Monday 22nd June sessions will go ahead as planned.

Noah has organised a wonderfully chilled Home Ed day featuring plenty of shade, water, calm activities and opportunities to stay cool. The rest of the team have been fully briefed on heat safety for both children and animals.

Please keep an eye out for tomorrow’s update regarding Tuesday’s sessions.

Stay cool, drink plenty of water, and remember: if you see Shelly wandering around carrying yet another water bucket, she’s probably not training for an ultra-marathon.

*we are only kidding. We barely get paid time. Overtime may simply mean wearing shorts while doing farm jobs. 😄

📢 Important Farm Update 📢 A rare and unsettling e 📢 Important Farm Update 📢

A rare and unsettling event has occurred at Apple Tree Farm…

Our core admin team have abandoned ship at the same time and headed off for a well-earned long weekend of adventuring. 😱

The remaining team members were understandably struggling with the emotional impact of this unprecedented separation, so emergency measures were swiftly implemented. As you can see, life-sized (well… chair-sized) replacements have been installed around the office to provide comfort, reassurance, and the illusion that someone is still answering emails. 🪑❤️

Fear not! The out-of-office replies are activated, the farm is still running as normal, and the rest of the team are being supported through this difficult period with regular coffee breaks and emotional support from the animals.

Normal levels of admin chaos will resume on Tuesday 9th June.

Until then, please be kind to our stand-ins — they’re doing their best. 😂
